Television Glomming with J.Kenner and CLAIM ME giveaway

In a recent conversation about various television shows, my editor for the Stark Trilogy (Release Me is now 12 weeks on the USA Today list and Claim Me is entering its fourth!!  But I digress …) told me about a relatively new show called The Americans. It is, she assured me, fantastic.

Now, I don’t watch a ton of television.  I usually have a maximum of three shows that I’m following at once, and they’re often seasons ahead of me.  But we’ve been becoming less enamored with a few standbys (cough—Mad Men – cough) and wanted to try something new. (The other show I recently started watching is White Collar – a totally different feel, but also loads of fun!)

We’ve only just finished episode two of The Americans, but I am hooked!  Why?  For the same reasons that make any fiction compelling:  great characters and a great story.

Let’s start with the characters.  In this case, our hero and heroine are also an anti-hero and heroine.  They are, for all intents and purposes, the bad guys.  The KGB.  The spies who infiltrated during the Cold War (and can I just say – the eighties?  I mean, the sound track alone is a hoot!).  And yet less than two hours of air time in and I absolutely love these people.  I’m rooting for them and curious about what happens and on desperately curious about where they started and where they are going to go.  (And it doesn’t hurt that the more bad-ass of the two is the woman, though that tends to be a trend in my favorite shows.  I’m thinking of Alias and Buffy.)

As for the story, the individual plots that I’ve seen so far have been limited, but the overarching story just screams drama.  A secret war against deep-cover agents during a volatile time in history.  That’s going to be either awesome or cheesy.  So far, The Americans seems to be leaning toward awesome.

And the really cool thing:  there are still about a dozen episodes on iTunes that we haven’t watched.  Which means that I see a glom-fest ahead of me.  And, yes, I should be writing.  I mean, I actually owe my editor some pages.  I wonder if I can claim television glomming as an excuse?  Especially since she’s the one who turned me on to the show …

  1. Can’t wait to read your trilogy! Hmm, I don’t watch a lot of TV, but have found Downton Abbey and Fringe to be very interesting & diversely different. I watch them on Roku/Netflex, no commercials! Thank you for the contest!

  2. I watch both ways, enjoying the shows as they air and then spending a day with the TV on in the background and replaying an entire season over a long weekend.

I do the same with books, often restarting a 10-15 book series at the beginning and reading all the way through before I tackle the newest release.

Looking forward to reading this one.

  3. I love Law and Order SVU, Fringe and Revolution. I like to watch the series as it goes along. Thanks for the giveaway.

  5. Like Arrow; watch as the episodes air

  6. My favorite show is Castle and I watch it live. I have yet to miss an episode. Nathan Fillion is so funny and cute!.

Thanks for the chance to win.

  7. We tried quite a few “cable” series this year but just gave up with them ending up “soapy”. I went back to my long time loves: Castle, NCIS and Big Bang Theory. We would have followed Arrow but the CW wasn’t on our system. Who knew we’d go back to network with our first year ever with satellight. I’d love to get to know your series.

  8. My fav series is The Walking Dead. I never thought I’d like a series like this… it took a year for my son to convince me to watch the 1st show with him… once I did, I was hooked. :-)))

BTW, I discovered you thru your Shadowkeepers’ series which I have thoroughly enjoyed; I haven’t tried this series yet… but plan to!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  9. I’d have to say that Castle is my favorite TV show, mainly because of the chemistry between the characters. I also like The Mentalist, NCIS, Elementary, and Flashpoint. I usually watch as the shows air. I am a big sports nut, so you would probably find me watching baseball, racing, or football before a lot of ‘regular’ shows.

  10. This year, Scandal has been my favorite, I think. Or maybe, Chicago Fire.

  11. I like to watch the shows on Investigative Discovery Channel and see what eveil element exists in our society. Thanks for the giveaway!

  12. There’s several shows I like – Castle, Longmire, Scandal – I prefer watching them live, but sometimes have to catch up with on-demand.

  13. Currently Big Bang Theory and Scandel. All time – Friends

  14. Congrats, Shelley! Please check your email & spam. If I haven’t heard back from you in 3 days I’ll have to draw another winner.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by. Hope to see y’all often, we have some great giveaways coming up!
