It is 1763 in Ryton, a large agricultural parish in County Durham. Reuben Cooper’s cottage burns to the ground and his remains are found in the ashes. The hole in his head says that he was murdered. James Blakiston sets himself to find the killer. Overseer of local landowner Lord Ravenshead’s estate, he is the just and upright man of the title. It will be 100 years before the idea and fact of the detective become known, and Blakiston has not a clue how to go about it. Luck, assistance and his own native intelligence combine to overcome his incompetence, enabling Blakiston to find the killer. While all this is going on, we see the everyday life of the parish through the eyes of Rector Thomas Claverley on the one hand and the Laws farming family on the other. There is birth, death, disaster, love, poverty, wealth, a hanging and a local revolt against a press gang. The bluff Blakiston falls hopelessly in love with farmer’s daughter Kate, who has the artifice (and the looks) to twist him round her little finger. He cannot, though, bring himself to propose marriage because of the difference in their stations. But when you set such a powerful man against such a powerful love, who knows what may happen?
