Shirley Skufca Hickman grew up in a Colorado coal mining town during World War II and wrote about those early years in her first book, Don’t Be Give Up. She prepared for her teaching career in Gunnison, Colorado and later moved to California where she taught high school and college English. One of her many teaching awards is Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. When parents asked for a book to help their children, she wrote School Success: 500 Ways Busy Parents Can Help Their Children Succeed in School. Recently she won first prize for her romance novel Sarah Darlin’ which takes place in San Francisco during the Gold Rush. Her young adult novel Fall in Love with an Orange Tree or a Book explores the shadow world in which young illegal immigrants from Mexico are forced to live and the struggles they endure to survive. It is required reading in several high schools. Is Everybody Happy Now? is a sequel to “Don’t Be Give Up,” and continues the story of Shirley’s family after World War II. She has been married to Joe Hickman for over 50 years, and they have a cherished son, a wonderful daughter-in-law, and two marvelous grandsons.
