Mozart’s Blood is historical fiction based on a real-life character, the opera singer Teresa Saporiti, who created the role of Donna Anna in Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni. The story spans four centuries and takes place in half a dozen great opera houses. It’s all about an abiding passion for music which even time and death cannot extinguish.
What would happen if your life could only be sustained with the blood of another? What would happen if that special supply is cut off because the person that injects it into you and supplies it has been kidnapped? What would happen if that person does not receive his special liquid, too? Octavia has had many careers in her lifetime. As a celebrated soprano she has performed many operas allowing her to take on many different roles and identities. Her assistant, Ugo, a man of mystery, possesses a major secret of his own. Together all the time, they travel throughout the world as she performs the lead roles in many different operas. But, when performing La Scala, Octavia attracts the attention of a secret vampire hunter who will do anything to possess her talents and make them his. When Ugo, her assistant disappears, and her supply of what she needs is gone, she realizes that she is no longer protected. Ugo, her protector walks the streets to find the elixir that feeds her soul in order to protect her secret. However, she is really not the young and beautiful soprano you see on the outside. She is centuries old and is a vampire who once shared the tooth with Mozart himself. Flashbacks to her past and her real identities, helps the reader understand how she came to be so dependent on Mozart, his blood and Ugo. As Octavia recalls her life she relates the events that happen each time she feeds on her prey. Each person that dies passes his/her memories to her and she relives them in her mind. Mozart is one of them and needs to feed on the same blood as she does and has taken many victims, too. He too relives their lives in his mind each and every day, as their memories never leave him even when he tries to compose. Without the blood of someone else she and many others cannot live. Although Octavia does not want to succumb to the wishes of La Societa, she has no choice but to follow their directives in order to survive and hopefully find Ugo, her assistant.
Ugo has a secret of his own and is now being manipulated by the same people as Octavia. Recounting her past for the reader to understand where she came from and how she came to be who and what she is, author Louise Marley weaves a plot that is very intricate. Intertwining the past with the present and enticing the reader to want to learn more about Mozart, his life and the opera, this book is a great read for anyone who loves Mozart and learning about that time period. Circumstances lead Octavia to commit acts that would sustain her life and hurt that of someone she cares about. Countess Milosch, the elders, La Societa and more control her movements, actions and that of so many more. Mozart’s blood runs through Octavia’s veins. What will happen to her? Will she save Ugo in time? Who will have Mozart’s memories and who will carry his blood? Who will attain greatness with Mozart’s blood within their veins? Read Mozart's Blood, an outstanding novel and find out for yourself.
