Farewell to Freedom

Farewell to Freedom is a story about a forty-seven year old woman, Cheyenne Stevens who files for divorce when her husband of twenty years, just weeks before Christmas, informs her that he has a mistress.

Cheyenne's girl friend Kathryn insists that she accompany her on a trip to Las Vegas to get away from the heartbreak of her failing marriage. She goes and while there meets a cowboy named Rowdy Harrison who's there for the National Finals Rodeo. He invites her to visit him for New Years at his father's ranch in Freedom, Oklahoma.

She travels to Freedom and falls in love with the cowboy. Shortly thereafter, she moves to Freedom leaving behind her family, friends, and a perfect world.

They live in a shabby, run-down bunkhouse; and, she soon grows tired of the meager surroundings. In an effort to create comforts more in style with what she's been accustomed to, Cheyenne builds a luxurious log lodge, restaurant and rodeo arena. She opens a dude ranch calling it Cedar Creek Ranch.

Initially, she feels excitement knowing that she's escaping the reality of her failed marriage by fleeing to a place called Freedom. However, the expectations of what she'd hoped to find there bear little resemblance to the daily trauma she endures.

Overlooking Rowdy's multitude of misgivings, she accepts his faults taking on the responsibility of paying his bills, caring for his elderly parents, and his three children. She invests in his bull business becoming a stock contractor for the PBR, paying dearly for the honor of being a female stock contractor.

Working long hard hours she builds a beautiful resort in the middle of the prairie, something that had never before been accomplished in the State of Oklahoma. She turns her dude ranch into a well known tourist destination entertaining visitors from around the world. Her marketing abilities attracted Hollywood to the ranch and they came with the intent of featuring Cheyenne, Rowdy, their family and friends in a reality TV show.

Cheyenne sometimes wished that every woman could know the healing that she experienced in loving a cowboy; however, she didn't expect that Rowdy would share his loving ways with every lonesome, pretty female guest who came to the ranch.

The restaurant became Rowdy's bank, he wined and dined the beautiful women guests, and he shared the wealth with all of his low-life cowboy friends. It didn't take Rowdy's step-son Trevor long to learn his step-dad's ways forcing her to open her eyes to what was actually going on around her.

Cheyenne's stamina, beauty, and money vanished. The love she'd once felt for the cowboy waned, and she knew it was time to get out of Dodge!  She attempted to sell the lodge to a shyster from Las Vegas. But after the restaurant burned to the ground he fled back to Vegas leaving her in financial ruin. Shortly after the restaurant fire a Texan buys her 3500 acre ranch but has no interest in the lodge and 40 acres it sits on. The ranch sale puts money back into her bank account and gives Cheyenne the courage to close the lodge and move on.

She hires a cowboy caretaker to look after the lodge and returns to one of her homes in Scottsdale, Arizona. Two years later residents call asking her to return to Freedom to re-open the lodge. The area was experiencing a huge oil and gas well boom and rooms were needed to house the oil field workers.

Cheyenne returns to Freedom skeptical that she'll be able to recreate the life she'd once known there.  She builds a small restaurant, reopens the lodge; and, immediately faces the same problems she'd faced before the fire.

She saw that Rowdy was drinking more than ever; starting his day with a beer in the shower in the morning and ending it with a fifth of Grey Goose Vodka at night.

Feeling trapped once again she offers the business for sale on eBay at a fraction of what she has invested; a Canadian buyer makes a low offer and she accepts it and drives away saying Farewell to Freedom.

Farewell to Freedom is a unique novel describing many of the author's true life experiences. It's a modern day western saga that will please both male and female readers. The story although it's unique, can be compared to a few great movie classics such as Giant, The Last Picture Show, and Thelma and Louise.
