Darcy Lemarsh is a loser. Angie Berry is a loser too, but she's a hottie. It's only natural that they should hook up.

Darcy gets to know Angie''s grandfather, Professor Jason Berry. Berry, once a respected faculty member at Berkeley is now a sodden old drunk who lives in a furnished room surrounded by his books and papers…and wine jugs. Some are still full of wine, others full of piss.

But Berry surprises the couple. Despite his problems, he has sold a novel to a major publisher. They have high hopes for the book but there's a hitch: they want Berry to go on tour to promote "The Little Mornings".

Hey, this old guy can't even make it down the hall to the bathroom. There's no way he can do a tour. But Berry gets an idea: Darcy is young, not bad looking and he has a good memory. Get Darcy cleaned up, a nice haircut and some good clothes and he can be Jason Berry.

At first Darcy is frightened out of his wits at such an idea, but under the pressure and sweet-talk of Berry and Angie, he allows himself to be taken up with the idea.

Unfortunately, just before the tour begins, Berry dies. Alone now and on their own, Angie and Darcy decide to go ahead with the tour. After an iffy start, Darcy begins to get into the rhythm of the ride, but in San Francisco, another young loser, Artie, shows up and tells them that he wrote "The Little Mornings." He quickly convinces them that he did write the book, which he had once given to his former lit prof at Berkeley for a critique.

This is when the whole business goes south. Angie and Darcy decide their only out not is to whack Artie and continue the tour. There's still a lot of money coming and they're not about to go home in shame and allow shame to be cast upon Angie's late grandfather.

From here on, things only get worse and finally, near the end of the tour Darcy is confronted by two detectives who know a lot more than he ever dreamed anyone could know.
